Travel Gift Guide: Luggage Options for the Holidays

It’s officially Black Friday, and we’re thinking about gift giving!

And you might be looking to gift luggage or to buy a new piece of baggage for yourself.

With so many different brands and options, we’ll take a look at the latest luggages — whether you’re a fan of hard or soft luggage — you can expect more colors and styles this 2019 holiday season.

Away

Starting with Away, the brand has launched a new, limited edition holiday collection — the Luminous — in six, jewel tone colors (amethyst, jade, jewel blue, moonstone, amber and mirror). This collection is hard-shell and polycarbonate with carry-on, bigger carry-on, medium and large sizes that range in prices from $275 to $345. But if you want the mirror shade, that will run from $375 to $445.

And if you’re looking for a soft-shell version, Away launched its first-ever soft-shell line, the Expandables recently, in October 2019. But be careful on expanding the carry-on too much as some airlines might make you check it in.

Tumi

And if you’re looking for an aluminum design, Tumi has a new one — the 19 Degree Aluminum. Now this collection will cost you a pretty penny with prices ranging from $1,095 to $1,495. Colors include silver, textured silver, Banyon Leaf (gold), and matte black.

Tumi describes these hard-shell pieces like works of art. The “super durable packing case boasts a modern silhouette with fluid looking, strategically contoured angles.”

Since the luggage is metal, it’s bound to wear and tear with dings and scratches. But Tumi includes stickers to decorate your case and hide its flaws, just in case.

Samsonite

And then there’s Samsonite’s newest, Tru-Frame. It’s a new hard-shell design that’s made of 100% polycarbonate with four, dual spinner wheels. It also has a TSA combination lock that is supposed to provide a peace of mind for travelers who check their luggages through security.

This two-piece set will cost you $1,090 and comes in flame orange and matte silver colors. The sizes are also sold individually and range from $500 to $590.

And if you’re looking for a soft-shell Samsonite to carry on, there’s a new Mobile Solution 19″ Expandable Spinner. The suitcase has a USB charging port and a wireless charging pocket to make it more high tech. Without your tech gadgets in there, the expandable luggage weighs in at 6.5 pounds.

SWISSGEAR

Another luggage brand that’s keeping up with tech trends is SWISSGEAR’s latest 7272 Energie line. The luggages are hard-shelled and have USB ports to connect a portable battery for charging on the go. The Energie line comes in just about every color ranging from periwinkle (below) to textured ocean blue. Prices for these pieces range from $119 to $199.

Briggs and Riley

Then, there’s a company that’s known for its lifetime guarantee luggage — Briggs and Riley. Its current, best-selling holiday luggage is its Expandable Spinner soft-shell line that boasts that it can hold 4-7 days of clothing and essentials in the main compartment. There’s also a CX technology to this bag that expands it but compreses it back to its original size. The colors are kept simple and range from olive, navy and black. And what’s the cost? The holiday deals range from $469 to $689.

Victorinox

And last but not least on our list, Victorinox has developed the Connex Large Softside Case. And while everyone around you might be making noise at the airport, this luggage apparently won’t add to it. Its silent Lisof tires are meant to travel on any surface, and the eight tires, according to Victorinox, are said to stay “super-quiet.” It comes in burgundy, grey, blue and black colors as well as both hard-shell and soft-shell designs. The prices for these range from $339 to $600.

These holiday luggage deals might not be around for long so if you’re in the market for a new luggage or know someone who could use one for their next travel, ’tis the season!
